Description

★★ The Pilgrimage paved the way to Paulo Coehlo’s international bestselling novel The Alchemist. In many ways, these two volumes are companions—to truly comprehend one, you must read the other.★★

The Pilgrimage is a 1987 novel by Brazilian novelist Paulo Coelho. It is a recollection of Paulo’s experiences as he made his way across northern Spain on a pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela. The novel serves as part adventure story, part guide to self-discovery.

The story begins in 1986 when Coelho undertakes his initiation into the order Regnus Agnus Mundi (RAM), which he subsequently fails. He is then told that he must embark on a pilgrimage along the Camino de Santiago to find the sword that is the symbol of his acceptance into the ranks of RAM. He must do this to gain insight into the simplicity of life. The journey transforms him as he learns to understand the nature of truth through the simplicity of life.

He begins his journey with a guide, also a member of RAM, who goes by the alias Petrus. During the journey Petrus shows him meditation exercises and introduces him to some of the more down-to-earth elements of Western mystical thought and philosophy, and teaches him about love and its forms: agape, philia and eros.

The journey is tough: physically, mentally, and spiritually. As they advance, various factors come into their lives, they pass through hamlets, towns, and each of the place has a story to tell to pilgrims. This route is taken by pilgrims for over a thousand years.

Petrus, from time to time, teaches him various exercises in order to bring out the extraordinary from the ordinary ones. Evil and angelic both kind of forces they encounter en route, through animals like dog and lamb, and persons like saint, waiter, gypsy and a gang of boys and women.

Initially Paulo thinks that the journey is futile and why the road to leading simple life is made so tough. He thinks of quitting, but every time some or other message that he gets, keeps him going. The most terrible incident is the fight with a dog called Legion.

That event marks the consequences of fear in human lives. Though he manages to win the fight, he gets wounded badly. Another obsessive aspect is Paulo’s greed for getting that sword soon. There are short cuts to reach their destination but they cannot take that – it isn’t allowed in the pilgrimage. Also, the sword is a reward, but what is to do with that reward, is the main message of the pilgrimage.

Step inside this captivating account of Paulo Coehlo’s pilgrimage along the road to Santiago. This fascinating parable explores the need to find one’s own path. In the end, we discover that the extraordinary is always found in the ordinary and simple ways of everyday people. Part adventure story, part guide to self-discovery, this compelling tale delivers the perfect combination of enchantment and insight.

The story also shows that love can make us stronger and it is this strength that allows us to make the right decision at the right time. The search of truth is assimilated to a personal search for meaning, for the things that we need in life such as truth, agape, enthusiasm, and spirituality.
