Whilst being effective at keeping us safe, it runs on broad images, impressions and feelings, which can make it easy to miss key bits of information. When running on the red system although decisions are made quickly, there is a significant trade-off in terms of the quality of decisions made.
The opposite system is the “Blue” system. This is where higher mental functions like prioritizing; planning; abstract thinking; problem solving and goal setting takes place. When looking to face complex challenges which require logic and reasoning, you must engage your blue system to produce anything worthwhile.
In other words, If your mind is a Red Head, this is an unresourceful state, where you feel stressed, anxious or under pressure and cannot think clearly. You have a high possibility of making mistakes. On the other hand, if you have a ‘Blue Head’, it’s the opposite, this is a calm state where your emotions are under control. You can think clearly, concentrate and make good decisions in a resourceful state avoiding any mistakes.

About the Author :
Dr Ceri Evans is a forensic psychiatrist and independent consultant working with clients in the area of performance under pressure. After graduating with distinction in medicine in his native New Zealand, Dr Evans was awarded a Rhodes scholarship to Oxford University. While gaining first class honours in experimental psychology, he played professional football in the English Football League Championship. Dr Evans is also former representative for the New Zealand football team, with 85 caps, and a 5th dan karate black belt.
After training in psychiatry at Maudsley Hospital in London, Dr Evans completed a PhD on traumatic memory. In addition to private clinical practice, he has worked across the spectrum with leading medical, corporate, government, legal and security forces specialists. He has also been involved with a number of elite sports teams and individuals.
