Description

★★ The transformative mind-model for performing under stress and making pressure your advantage – used by the planet’s top performers ★★

In Performance Under Pressure, forensic psychiatrist Dr Ceri Evans gives you the tools to take control of the moment. Beat doubt, worry, regret and burnout with simple mind techniques and discover the secret of how to be ‘comfortable being uncomfortable’.

It will help you not only survive but thrive in situations that up until now have been holding you back. Targeting the moments when you are most stressed and uncomfortable, Dr Ceri Evans’ red-blue mind model converts his clinical insights into a simple approach that will help you gain emotional control when you need it most.

We are faced by two threats: Real external dangers which pose a risk to our health (think of being chased by a hungry predator) and internal threats caused by the fight we put ourselves through when facing something we perceive to be a threat (think of a footballer taking the game-deciding penalty in a tournament).

In this book, Dr. Ceri Evans, a psychiatrist and performance consultant, explores the impact of pressure on our thoughts, emotions, and actions. He explains the concept of the “red mist,” which refers to the state of mind where pressure can cause us to become overwhelmed, lose focus, and make poor decisions.

Dr Ceri Evans has devised the “Red-blue” model to help explain how our brain approaches threats and deals with emotional regulation.

The “Red” system specializes in the emotional regulation of our brain and processes social and emotional information to give us split-second reactions; it can be also known as the classic “fight-or-flight” response. Whilst being effective at keeping us safe, it runs on broad images, impressions and feelings, which can make it easy to miss key bits of information. When running on the red system although decisions are made quickly, there is a significant trade-off in terms of the quality of decisions made.

The opposite system is the “Blue” system. This is where higher mental functions like prioritizing; planning; abstract thinking; problem solving and goal setting takes place. When looking to face complex challenges which require logic and reasoning, you must engage your blue system to produce anything worthwhile.

In other words, If your mind is a Red Head, this is an unresourceful state, where you feel stressed, anxious or under pressure and cannot think clearly. You have a high possibility of making mistakes. On the other hand, if you have a ‘Blue Head’, it’s the opposite, this is a calm state where your emotions are under control. You can think clearly, concentrate and make good decisions in a resourceful state avoiding any mistakes.

If you want to be better at what you do, pressure is unavoidable. This book will help you feel comfortable being uncomfortable, overcome mental obstacles and unlock your true potential. No one is immune to pressure. We all fall victim to its effects in the same ways. But pressure is misunderstood. Pressure can be your greatest ally in leading a fulfilling and successful life. The more discomfort there is in a situation, the better it is for those who have prepared.

Throughout the book, Dr. Evans offers practical strategies, case studies, and exercises to help readers apply the Three Cs framework in real-life scenarios. He explores various aspects of performance under pressure, including decision-making, focus, resilience, and managing emotions.

In a nutshell, this very first book, Dr Ceri Evans shares the life-changing methods he uses with some of the planet’s top performers. This book will give you a better understanding of how the brain behaves under pressure using the Red-Blue mind model, a simple, contagious and universally applicable recipe for dealing with whatever pressure you have in your life, whatever form it takes.

By providing insights into the psychological aspects of pressure and offering actionable techniques, “Perform Under Pressure” aims to empower individuals to perform at their best in high-stakes situations, whether it’s in sports, business, or other areas of life.
