It’s here! Number one bestselling author Stephenie Meyer makes a triumphant return to the world of Twilight with this highly-anticipated companion; the iconic love story of Bella and Edward told from the vampire’s point of view.

Midnight Sun is a companion book to the original 2005 Twilight trilogy by author Stephenie Meyer. This book revisits everything in 2005’s Twilight, showing us the same events from vampire heartthrob Edward Cullen’s perspective, including Edward and Bella’s slowly building relationship, their attempts to keep intensely passionate feelings in check and the deadly threat from another vampire that shows up at the end of the book.

It is also a retelling of “Twilight,” but this time author Stephenie Meyer has written the book from Edward’s point of view rather than Bella Swan’s. When Edward Cullen and Bella Swan met in Twilight, an iconic love story was born. But until now, fans have heard only Bella’s side of the story.

At last, readers can experience Edward’s version in the long-awaited companion novel, Midnight Sun.Meyer stated that Twilight was to be the only book from the series that she planned to rewrite from Edward’s perspective. To give them a better feel of Edward’s character.

Edward talks at length, for instance, about his history and the loving choices that his adoptive vampire “parents” made to give him a sense of grounding and a family to help him through the most difficult and vulnerable parts of his long life.

And we see those family members make personal sacrifices to aid Edward, even when they don’t always agree with his choices. Now, it’s all played out in a broadly fantastic setting of “eternal” life, super-strength and an ever-hovering threat of gruesome savagery; but the close ties, the sacrifices and the love of the portrayed relationships still ring true.

This unforgettable tale as told through Edward’s eyes takes on a new and decidedly dark twist. Meeting Bella is both the most unnerving and intriguing event he has experienced in all his years as a vampire. As we learn more fascinating details about Edward’s past and the complexity of his inner thoughts, we understand why this is the defining struggle of his life. How can he justify following his heart if it means leading Bella into danger?

The tale can be easily seen to be an allegorical examination of struggles a typical teen might have: sexual tensions and temptations, feelings of jealousy and earnest efforts toward abstinence. There are also very strong notes here about the power of family bonds and the blessings of adoption.

In Midnight Sun, Stephenie Meyer transports us back to a world that has captivated millions of readers and brings us an epic novel about the profound pleasures and devastating consequences of immortal love.

So, what does he have to say? Well, a lot. More than 600 pages a lot. The general “Twilight” story remains unchanged — girl moves to Forks, Wash., vampire boy appears unimpressed, then gets one whiff of her blood, which smells like the vamp’s version of Cinnabon, and becomes obsessed. (The feeling is mutual.) But layered atop that familiar tale is a new look at Edward’s internal struggle concerning Bella, along with deep glimpses into his past and his family dynamics, that make him a more complex, and better, character.

“Midnight Sun” is still the Edward and Bella love story, but with a heightened look at how Edward deals with the extreme conflicts of his love. He thinks Bella’s the greatest woman on earth and feels reborn when she makes his “dead frozen heart beat again,” but he also knows the odds are high that he’ll massacre her in biology class. As he put it, “She wanted me — bliss. She was risking her very life for me — unacceptable.”

Midnight Sun also gave me insight into characters we thought we knew so well. I was blindsided in learning the true personality of the characters and readers was truly impressed at how cleverly they were able to learn the truth of these characters through Edward’s gift of mind reading.

Edward’s relationships with his coven (or siblings) was also very interesting as many came to realise that there was so much about Edward and his coven that many didn’t know simply because the Twilight Saga is through Bella’s lens. Readers really enjoyed learning whom Edward is closest with in the coven and how each sibling came to came together to form Cullens.

Although this book takes place at the same time as Twilight and we follow the same storyline as we did in Twilight just through Edward’s lens, we are blessed with insight into Edward’s history as well as the backstories of other characters. My personal favourite is Carlisle’s backstory.

Whilst the book fills in a lot of blanks and we see what was really happening in scenes that didn’t feature Edward in Twilight, Readers would have loved to have seen more of Edward’s history. Being immortal, he had a long history to share.
